isolation anthem: TRAVEL MELODRAMA

Nov 11, 2014

Moving from city to city, as a researcher, I am moderating, moving, constantly in a chronic state of unrest.  This series of photos in antiseptic scenarios are a purely self-serving exercise during an otherwise work-focused period of activity.

Waiting for cabs in the middle of the night.  The last woman standing in a corporate lobby.  Living off Clif bars and blessed free bananas.  Keeping it on track in the absence of humanity.

Finding moments of solitude to capture during business travel helps combat loneliness.  By documenting these moments, I’m sharing my strangely meditative experience of the beauty found in fluorescent-lit, cheaply carpeted offices and airports of American cities and suburbs.

Cat Show

May 5, 2014

I went to a cat show & took photographs.  Why?  Because I love cats.  Cat shows are places where cat lovers go.

You’ll encounter aisles and aisles of cats in cages, loving owners grooming and teasing them to furry perfection.  Demonstrations and examinations of certain beautiful kitty individuals happen at different stations throughout the large convention center.

Cat lovers are interesting people, to be sure.  Me, my friend, and a thousand others here for the fur.  Young women, old men, middle-aged ladies of all shapes and clothing styles.  One bro.  I saw one bro.

Among the cages, scratching posts, and cat-themed apron dresses for sale, the cats took their showcase in stride.  Good-natured by selection, adorable by trade, the cats tolerated us humans and our commercialized worship.

Ancient times had rituals, blessings, preferred household member status.  Today, we drag them to Santa Monica and put leis on them for Tiki Theme.  Is it cruel?  Is it ridiculous?  Is it fun?

Portland, the green

May 5, 2013

i love Los Angeles.  But the Northwest is a special place.

Portland2

I moved to Portland around seven years ago.  Portland felt like a small town, with a slow, connected pace of life.  When I lived off Burnside, the center of town, it seemed I knew someone on every corner.

Domo Van Cat Porch Portland

On a recent visit to Portland, I noticed how many more people had moved to the city.  Traffic was dense.  Faces were new.   I’ve moved many times, but am always amazed at the short amount of time it takes to recognize a significant amount of change in a city.

Burnside Bridge Panorama Portland

My favorite part of returning is seeing the types of interaction retained.  People running their indie shops selling homemade wares asked how I was– genuinely!  Organic, sustainable EVERYTHING was readily available.  Everywhere I looked, greenery dominated the moss-covered streets and giant, towering trees.

It feels so good to be in love with LA,  but going back to Portland is like entering an alternate reality.  If I could double myself, one version would still be Northwest, eating like a queen, recognizing everyone on the street, and grabbing friendly Stumptown coffee freebies.
